How To Make Homemade Laundry Soap – An Easy Recipe

Making homemade laundry soap is very easy to do, costs pennies per load and you control the ingredients. I’ve always had good results with my recipes. I use the liquid because I always wash in cold water. The powder works great too and is less trouble to make. Either way I think you will be pleased with the results.

Ingredients are:

  • Bar Soap – you can use , Ivory or Zote. Fels-Naphta can be found at Ace Hardware and Walmart in the laundry section. Ivory soap is widely available. I’ve heard Zote can be found at Family Dollar, 99¢ stores and Big Lots.
  • Washing Soda – is found in the laundry section
  • Borax – is found in the laundry section
  • Baking Soda (optional)

Liquid Recipe:

  • 1 bar of soap, grated -I use a hand-held cheese grater
  • 1 cup Washing Soda
  • 1 cup Borax
  • 1/2 cup Baking Soda
  • water
In a medium pan add 3 cups water and grated soap. Stir over medium heat until soap is melted. Add Washing Soda, Borax and baking soda, stir until dissolved. Pour mixture into a 2 gallon container. Add enough water to fill the container. Stir well. Cover and let the mixture sit over night. Stir before each use. Use 1/4 to 1/2 cup per load. The mixture will be a watery gel like consistency

Powder Recipe:

  • 2 bars soap – for powder recipe I would suggest grating the soap and then using a blender to get a fine powder.
  • 2 cups Borax
  • 2 cups Washing Soda
Mix the ingredients well and store in an air tight container. Use 1 to 2 tablespoons per load.

Thanks for your post, NFH 🙂
I have also heard of adding a few drops of flower essence (found at most health food stores) in the wash cycle.

Thanks realpennywise! You could defiantly add flower essence/essential oils for fragrance. Unfortunately for me, I have to be very careful with fragrances. I am allergic to most scents. Even though I use 1/2 cup white vinegar in the rinse, my clothes smell…. well, like nothing. Just the way I need them to. Thanks for adding that tip!
